Small Green Bee-eaters |
The day is spent in fending for food. For a bird like the beautiful Small green bee-eater, it's especially a tough ask as it often catches insects, wasps in the mid air doing acrobatics. ( That's why it's called वेडा राघू in Marathi). So it needs to spend energy to gain energy ( like पैसा कमाने के लिये भी पैसा चाहिए!) But as the sun goes down, it's a different world altogether! The wings need to rest to regain energy. So sleep is essential. Also absence of light weakens the sense of vision. That makes the bird vulnerable for predators who hunt in the darkness of night! Therefore there's not just a warmth, but a security in sleeping in a huddle. The bird's community behaviour is thus useful for its survival...

I have purposely not cropped the image so that you would appreciate how this bird merges with the surroundings. This bird is primarily an insectivore and active during dusk and dawn. It prefers to rest on the ground as the camouflage offers security. This is a day time photo of the bird. I have also shot the bird near Bhigwan at night and at ground level. The difference in its eyes is clear between the two photos. For the photo from Bhigwan, I had to literally lie down on the floor to get a better view of the bird. The bird was so still and unfazed by the light falling on it, that it was as if it was used all the light, camera and action!

Mottled Wood Owl in camouflage-
We were in a moving gypsy in Ranthambore and suddenly when I saw the tree above, I saw this bird, perfectly camouflaged. I don't know if that is true or not, but I was told that you don't so commonly get to see Mottled Wood Owl in Ranthambore. That made the sighting all the more memorable.
