Musical Journey of Film 'Anuradha'

'Anuradha' is a movie by director Hrishikesh Mukherjee released way back in 1960, is still a classic because of all the elements- the story, direction, acting, lyrics(Shailendra) &  music(by Pandit Ravi Shankar). It is one movie in which the music & the story blend so well that they are inseparable. So in this blog, I am going to take you for a musical journey of 'Anuradha'..
Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Music Director Pt Ravi Shankar

Lyricist Shailendra

The movie begins with Lata Mangeshkar’s rendition of Bhairavi- ‘Saware Saware kahe mose jora jori’…the song is relayed on AIR & helps establish the fact that the story is about the
protagonist Anuradha (played by Leela Naidu)who was a popular singer 10 years back.
The director unfolds the story sensitively & also using the flashback technique. That the Music is so very close to Anuradha’s heart is established through a longish musical play (sung by Mahendra Kapur, Manna Dey & Lata).
This also helps to bring Anuradha & Dr. Nirmal(played by Balraj Sawhney) close. The rosy, romantic, dreamy phase of their life is epitomized by the fast paced, bubbly song based on raag Tilak -Shyam- ‘Jane kaise sapnon mein kho gayee akhiyan’.
The dream that she saw of togetherness changes with time -as the doctor, committed as he is to the service of the poor patients of the village, is unable to give any time to her. She has sacrificed her passion-music, but he remains engulfed in his work. So much so that even the smallest far away sound of music disturbs his concentration. She longs for his company, his love.. This is emphasized by beautiful background music score which Pandit Ravi Shankar has used. We hear so many of Sarangi pieces.(in raagas like Malkauns, Darbari Kanada). One is on the tune of ‘Piya ke milan ki aas’-based on morning Raga- Jogiya. This matches with situation well. It is their wedding anniversary & he has promised her to come home in time. But is held up with emergency case & comes next morning.
Not just Sarangi, but we also have flute pieces( one I think in Raag Rageshri) & of course Sitar pieces as well.As the circumstances would have it, she suddenly meets the same person-Deepak (Abhi Bhattacharya) whom her father wanted her to get married. Deepak loves her & her music intensely. He asks her to sing a song for her. And then we have the song- ‘Kaise din beete kaise beeti ratiyan piya jaane na’… based on raag Manj Khamaj..

The beginning of ‘Haaye’ the boltaan ,has been rendered so piercingly by Lata that it conveys all the hurt & pain of the wife in that situation. The director shows the doctor here who is oblivious to her sufferings- engrossed in reading his medical book. The yearning for love is further exemplified by the lyrics-‘khilne ko tarse nanhi nanhi kaliyan’..
With the further turn of events, she is about to leave the doctor & go back to her father along with Deepak. Dr. asks her to wait for a night as some guests are to visit them for dinner. The guest who is also a doctor understands the situation instantly. Anuradha sings another song-‘ ‘Haaye re wo din kyo na aaye’ A song based on Raag Kalavati (or is it Jansammohini?) This songs also puts forth her feeling state-‘sooni meri Beena sangeet bina, Sapnon ki mala murjhaye’ ‘Haaye re wo din kyu na aaye, ja ja ke ritu laut aaye’.

The guest(Nazir Hussain) helps to salvage the situation as he gives due credit of her sacrifice & contribution in the success of the doctor’s career. The movie ends on a happy note- Anuradha doesn’t depart the next morning. But is shown to clean the dust in the house, throwing it out of the house. As in the beginning, towards the end too we hear Bhairavi(again Sarangi)…
