Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher Tour

                                                                      ...1...
This is Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher ( ODKF). Just look at the amazing colours that it has- red, orange, black, blue, purple, yellow! It is almost a riot of colours! You could fall head over heels in love with this bird! It is around 13 cm in length & weighs just around 20 grams! But this guy has some strength in the wings! He travels all the way from Kerala or even Sri Lanka to come to Konkan at the onset of monsoon, which is also it's breeding season. The bird builds the nest which is at a height of 5-6 feet from the ground. The nest is built inside the mud, like a tunnel & it could be about a meter long. The nest is so camouflaged by the ferns & the green vegetation that it is v difficult to locate it. The female lays 3-4 eggs which get hatched in about 17 days. That marks the beginning of an industrious activity for both male & female- that of feeding the young ones! Initially they feed the chicks with small insects like dragonflies or wasps. But with the growing age, the demand for the food increases. So the size of the kill increases. Then the parents bring skinks, geckos, crabs, fish, small frogs etc. So you could make out the size of the chicks looking at the kill in the beak of the parent!

Before entering in the nest to give feed, the bird sits just for a while on that horizontal perch. It moves back & forth & then disappears in the nest.

Not before giving you an opportunity to capture some beautiful shots!
Thanks to Ashish Inamdar, who organized this wonderful ODKF tour on 15 & 16th July, for this wonderful experience that has opened up a world, that had remained unexplored for me.
A world created by Nature Conservationist Mr. Nishikant or Nandu Tambe, at Village Shiravali off Chiplun- Guhagar road. More about it some time later....

                                                                            ..2..

Seen in this photo with me is Mr. Nishikant or Nandu Tambe! He must be around 30-35 years of age, as is typical of people from Konkan area, he too is slim. Wearing T-shirt & a Bermuda. When you go for the ODKF tour, the arrangements for the meals are at Nandu's cousin brother's place( his name- Shriram or fondly called Rambhau). Nandu is so unassuming that you would find him arranging tables, arranging plates & even serving food at all the tables! You might not even recognize that he is the same person who has done a pioneering work for the conservation of ODKF. To add to it, Nandu is quite shy & talks very less. That too only to the point. This stands out as a stark contrast in this era of marketing, projection & blowing your trumpet! I asked him in the style of a seasoned journalist as to how did all his work begin. Nandu very hesitantly showed us a video that depicted the beginning, but he also told us not to share it on a larger scale as there was some problem with the voice-over.
From the video we came to know that in one of the rainy seasons, due to heavy rains & storm in Chiplun area near Nandu's house,a tree fell off around the nest of ODKF. Frightened by this, the male & female birds ran away, leaving behind the vulnerable chicks. Nandu, an expert on snakes, then called his friend Abhay from Pune & then started their mission to rescue the young ones. First, they kept a big mosquito net around the area of the nest. Then they fed the chicks with the kills. They even went fishing & brought fresh fish. Nandu was bitten by a snake which was near the nest. But they caught the snake & released it in the jungle. Gradually the chicks grew up. They even taught the birds to kill. Then it was about time to release them in the wild. Unfortunately, two birds died-couldn't survive. But the ones that survived later on came for a few days more & sat on Nandu's hand!
Now Nandu has around 17-18 active nests in his area. The commitment shown by Nandu about this work is worth appreciating. Whenever he sees a bird building in a particular area, he stops human activity there to minimize human interference. If the nest is in someone else's area, he even compensates them financially for stopping activity there. Of the 17-18 nests, only 4 are open for photography. He says his first priority is the comfort of the birds. Photography is not even second in that priority list! He decides which group would go on which site & allows 3-31/2 hours for each session. This gives some breathing time & space for the birds. He intends to fit GPS ring on the birds so that he would be able to track which bird came back to which nest etc. Actually, ODKF is not an endangered bird. It is in large numbers & distributed widely. But the passion with which Nandu is working for this bird is simply amazing. Hope this inspires many more to undertake many such works of conservation...

                                                                       ..3..
While we were patiently waiting for the ODKF to come & sit on the perch, for we take take its photos, sometimes, the wait was very much testing & even frustrating. Few minutes would seem like hours. It was in this in-between time that this bird-Tickell's Blue Flycatcher- would come as a filler of sort! He would do all the similar activities. And boy! He too was beautiful! We would practice focusing on this bird & that helped a lot when we resumed shooting the ODKF. So we must be thankful to this little guy...

The Story of Tigress & cubs of Bandhavgarh-1

The story of Kankati-
As mentioned in my earlier blog, we saw Bamera's Son & 3 cubs at a place called Tadoba in the Maghadi zone of Bandhavgarh. The cubs were 4 months old & needed attention from their mother. But it was a surprise that even the father Bamera's Son was taking that responsibility. We didn't see the Mother in the evening safari on the first day. But next day in the same place, we saw her( this time there was no father- or Bamera's Son) along with the cubs & a small story unfolded in front of us. Well, we couldn't capture the story entirely in our cameras. So I would have to fill in those gaps with my words..

It so happened that Kankati had a kill & she was feasting on it along with her 4 month old cubs when we saw them in the morning. The jury is still out whether the kill was a wild boar or a spotted deer!
The tigress Kankati

For the cubs it was a learning session- they watched their mother eating the kill, intently & observantly.

One of the cubs, tried to snatch a piece away from the mother & received a loud 'scolding' from mother & so had to retreat..

Kankati enjoying the brunch...

The no-non sense looks...

Its interesting why they named her 'Kankati'. In this photo, you could see the slight slit on her left ear...

After she was finished with eating her share, the kids took their turn & then...

... It was time to clean..

In the meanwhile, there was one independent-minded cub.. It went on its own, away from the mother to the pond nearby.

It took dip in the water...

...came out..

..to return to the family...

This girl, Kankati, was so cool that she posed for the photographers... She was in the world of her own.. Oblivious to the surrounding..not distracted by the human presence ,the noise of the constant gunfire like clicking that could be heard, & also the attention, that she & her family were getting..

Having had a sumptuous meal could also be the reason for her poses...

A cuddly cub & a motherly care..

After the brunch... it was about time to venture out...Baby's Day out with Mommy...

Time to cool off & for a morning siesta...all at once...
... And for the kids to just relax & hang around..

A Family that eats together, stays together !!!

Tigers of Bandhavgarh...

Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh- in the Umaria district. It is spread over approximately 1700 square km( as told to us by the guide during our trip.) & 4 zones- Khitauli, Tala, Maghadi & Panpatha. We are allowed to see only the 20% of the jungle. It has one of the highest density of tiger population in India. The park is open from 16 October till 30th June. But I would say that the best time to visit for higher probability of tiger sighting is in April & May-even if the temperature could rise up to 42 degree C. But it is at this time that the water becomes scarce, the vegetation is dry & the tigers have to come near the waterholes. Therefore it becomes easier to see them out in the open. The nearest airport is Jabalpur (about 200 km away from Bandhavgarh) & the nearest railway station is Katni (about 100 km).The roads from Jabalpur & katni are in good shape. So the travel to Bandhavgarh is  hassle free taking 4 hours from Jabalpur & 2 hours from Katni to reach to the national park.

We went to Bandhavgarh from 11-13th may 2017 & saw 12 tigers over there-3 adult males       (Bheem, Bamera's son & Mahamana's son) 3 females (Spotty, Kankati & Solo) & 6 cubs- 3 of Spotty & 3 of Kankati. We saw tigers in each of the 5 safaris. If we count the repeat sightings, then in our total trip we saw 21 tigers!

Before this trip to Bandhavgarh, my count of tiger sighting was-
1) Kanha (2008)-1
2) Jim Corbett (2011)-0
3) Tadoba
(2016)- 4

Of course, even if I might not have seen many tigers, I have thoroughly enjoyed all my trips to the jungle. Each trip has been etched on my mind for different reasons- I think that the Kanha jungle is extremely well maintained. I remember the meadows, the exclusive Barasinghas, the different birds(especially the spotted owlets & scarlet minivets, the Painted Francolin)) & also the tall Saal trees. We saw tiger only once over there, but it was thrilling to experience the presence of a moving tiger near you through the alarm calls of spotted deer, barking deer, the vigorous tapping of feet made by the Sambar deer & also the restless activity of the langurs- all this in the silence of the jungle! Jim Corbett National Park had an entirely different terrain & beauty of its own. The vast expanse of the jungle was indeed v haunting. During the evening safari we had seen at least 150 elephants gathering near a lake as if it were a World Elephant Conference! The river Ramganga that flows right through the jungle, has a tendency to change its course. That alters the jungle significantly. I would remember Tadoba for the ease with which we could see a pack of Wild dogs from a close distance at Pandharpauni.

To see 21 tigers in 5 safaris at Bandhavgarh was indeed very rewarding to say the least! Another aspect was that we could see them for a pretty long period of time & from a v close distance. It wasn't just a fleeting sight. We could see them for at least 1/2 hour or more..In fact we had to leave their place & go somewhere as either it was the end of safari or we wanted to see other part of the jungle. . So we can safely conclude that Bandhavgarh doesn't disappoint...

Here, in this album, is a look at the 3 adult males that we saw during our trip & these are by no means the only tigers in Bandhavgarh!

1) This is Mahamana's Son- seen in the Maghadi zone-

Earlier I had mentioned about dry vegetation in summer. One can appreciate in this photo how that has helped us to spot the tiger. If the grass were to be green & tall(which is the case in winter), we would not have been able to see the animal. It is also interesting how these animals get their names. Mahamana is actually the name of the village nearby. A tigress was seen in that area. So she began to be named as Mahamana tigress & this is her son. So sometimes, the tigers get their names from the areas they are seen. Sometimes they are named due to their peculiar characteristics on their body- for example Spotty & Dotty-the two sisters got their names from their spots. While Kankati, the tigress got her names due to a slit on her left ear.And then initially there was a tiger by the name Charger- who was so named as he used to charge on to vehicles & elephants.
This guy, Mahamana's Son  was not far from us & was hidden in the grassland. It was evening time & just about time to wind up the safari. We had already seen Bamera's Son with 3 cubs.So we were in that sense very much contented.  But there were still some people from other jeeps who were audacious enough to go almost away from the road in to the grass to have a closer look at the animal... That was totally unnecessary & full of risk. Thankfully, he didn't react...

2) Bheem- Seen in the Khitauli Zone. We saw this royal, majestic animal, perhaps the biggest tiger of Bandhavgarh during the very first safari. And let me also tell you that it was a very close encounter for us. He was walking alongside our vehicle & was only 6-8 feet away from us. But he was calm & composed. He was in the world of his own & went away crossing our vehicles.

Bheem cooling himself in water in the scorching summer heat...

... and then walking away...

3) Bamera's son- Seen in the Maghadi zone.

An unusual trait for this guy is that he is still with his approximately 4 month old cubs. This also means that he shares the responsibility of making a kill for the cubs, along with the mother of the cubs-Kankati. The guides told us that this was similar to his father- Bamera.

Bamera's son again- It is interesting to note that whenever tigers have to enter water, they do so by putting their hind limbs first in the water. May be this way, they are able to judge the depth of the water..

Interestingly this area is called Social or Tadoba. I don't why is it called Social. But the pond seems to be artificially made for the tigers. And there are similar waterholes in Tadoba. So the name... So we actually saw a Tadoba in Bandhavgarh!

                                                                              १

ते ही म्हणाले -'You just enjoy the jungle!'
